Who or what is Greg?

Greg came to life in 2024, when a wonderful class of students began a persuasive language unit of work in their English class. Their teacher, who had always thought of the Australian white ibis (Threskiornis Molucca)as a suitable symbol of adaptability and survival, decided to make the ‘bin chicken’ the class mascot.

In planning a mentor text – a video advertisement for a food truck brand – said teacher created her faux business and its logo with a bin chicken at the centre. Thus, Greg Loves Donuts was born.

In mid 2024, a crocheted effigy of Greg was commissioned at a local market in Montrose, and the Year 7 students were excited to have him join the class. Greg made guest appearances in other classes, and even in some writing extension lessons with a local primary school’s grade 6s, where he promptly became a legend.

2025 welcomed a new cohort of excited students to Year 7, and Greg was received with even greater enthusiasm. When they watched the mentor text video made the previous year, they were delighted that they too would get the chance to engross themselves in not only fun, but authentic learning.
